Why Make Your Own Play Dough?

Homemade play dough is not only cost-effective, but it’s also safer than store-bought versions, which may contain preservatives and artificial ingredients. Plus, when you make it yourself, you can customize it with fun colors, calming essential oils, and even a little sparkle for extra magic!

Miss Mona’s Easy Play Dough Recipe

You’ll need:

  • 2 cups flour

  • 1 cup salt

  • 2 cups water

  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar

  • 2 tablespoons oil (vegetable or coconut)

  • Optional: Food coloring, essential oils for scent, and sparkles for extra fun

How to Make It:

  1. In a medium saucepan, mix the flour, salt, water, cream of tartar, and oil. If you want colored dough, add a few drops of food coloring before heating.

  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. The mixture will start to thicken after a few minutes. Keep stirring until it forms a dough-like consistency and pulls away from the sides of the pan.

  3. Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.

  4. Once cool enough to handle, knead the dough until it’s smooth and soft. If you’re adding essential oils or sparkles, now’s the time! Lavender, peppermint, or citrus oils can make the dough smell amazing while adding a sensory benefit.

  5. Store the play dough in an airtight container or zip-top bag. It will stay fresh for weeks!
